The Southern California Writing Centers Association invites submissions for our 2021 Online Tutor Showcase. Instead of an in-person conference, this online showcase is launching as a website alongside live webinars and chats on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Its theme is “Change.”

Change speaks to the very nature of writing centers – every tutee we meet offers an opportunity to rethink and change our approach to facilitating their progress. 2020 has broadened this beyond our time with tutees. Writing center practices have changed, and this showcase’s purpose is to highlight the ways we have changed and continue to change. We also plan to provide a digital space for community-building.

This year’s proposals have 2 format options. Because all final submissions will be hosted on a website, proposals for pre-recorded audio/video content and web-based multimodal content will be accepted. Successful proposals will not only address the theme but also how the final submission will make the most of the digital format.

As you develop your proposals, you might consider the following questions:

  • In what ways has your tutoring changed in the last year?
  • How have you and/or your writing center changed?
  • What advice do you have for those who want to improve their tutoring?
  • What are some of the unanticipated benefits of having to change your tutoring work to adapt to the pandemic?
  • How has your approach to working with students changed in the ongoing social justice movement to address racism and antiracism?
  • How are you coping with changes this year, and what have some of those changes been?

Examples of final submissions might include:

  • Pre-recorded presentations by an individual or team of tutors
  • Personal narratives with multimodal elements
  • Video art or photo essays
  • Vlogs or audio podcasts

Proposals are due Friday, November 13, 2020 via

The proposal review committee will be in touch about the status of your proposal by December and, if accepted, will outline the process for sending your final submission at least 1 month before the showcase’s date.
