Crossing Borders, Breaking Boundaries: The Writing Center as Passport

Just as passports enable us to cross borders into new and challenging situations, so do writing centers help students enter new writing contexts and challenges. This conference will focus on ways that writing centers can help students cross boundaries and barriers of access, achievement, and possibility. Potential questions to be addressed include the following:

How does the Writing Center serve as a passport:

  • for student writers as they encounter new writing situations?
  • for tutors as they work with students with diverse disciplines, experiences, abilities, and backgrounds?
  • for greater access and boundary/border crossing within the academic community it serves?
  • in our everyday practices?

Writing Center tutors are invited to submit proposals for fifty-minute sessions led by an individual or group. Sessions include 10 to 15 minutes of presentation followed by a facilitated discussion, guided activity, or both. Sessions will be run by and for tutors; writing center directors will meet separately.

A poster announcing the conference is available here – please circulate it widely!

Please submit your proposal on the submission page by Friday, November 14th Monday, December 1st!
