The Southern California Writing Centers Association (SoCalWCA) was created to further the theoretical, pedagogical, and political interests of writing center professionals in the region and to encourage dialogue about writing and learning. Open Board Meeting – Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 @ 10:00am PST

This meeting included position updates from the SoCal WCA executive board members, information about upcoming nominations for board positions, and updates about the 2021 Tutor Showcase. A recording of this meeting can be found here

2021 Online Tutor Showcase – April 10th, 2021 

The 2021 Online Tutor Showcase website will go live on Saturday, April 10th, 2021. Presenters’ work will be hosted at The infographic here overviews what you can expect the day of the showcase and how this year’s event differs from a typical “conference.” 

To celebrate our tutors’ work, SoCal WCA is also offering 2 live Zoom sessions (registration is now closed) during the showcase, which are intended to continue the association’s growth.

  • From 10-11am PST, SoCal WCA President, Percival Guevarra, will be hosting the Writing Center Professionals’ meeting, which will offer 2 breakout room activities that will help us brainstorm and develop ways to use the Showcase.
  • From 11am-noon PST, SoCal WCA Vice President, Kim Arbolante, will be hosting a Tutor Alumni panel. She’s invited several former tutors who will answer some questions about the theme “Change” as well as questions from attendees.

Upcoming Open Executive Board Positions:

Multiple positions on the SoCal WCA Executive Board are coming available this Summer. The upcoming open positions are:

  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Two-Year College Representative
  • IWCA Representative
  • Proposal Review Chair
  • *NEW* Tutor Representative

Responsibilities for each position can be found here. Joining the SoCal WCA Executive Board is an excellent opportunity to build cross-institutional community and support, contribute to unique opportunities for peer tutors, and deepen your professional development in the field. The timeline for the upcoming board positions is as follows:

  • May 1 – Nominations open
  • June 1 – Ballot opens 
  • June 11 – Ballot closes
  • June 14 – Results announced
  • July 1 – Officers change hands
